Joe, I really don't know what type of trading you're looking to do but you might consider WOWdt (Windows on WallStreet) to start off with. It does have time and sales, also a good scanner, and a full portfolio manager. I use both Tradestation and WOWdt. WOWdt I use for stocks and TS for futures. Just a suggestion, take a look at the demo on their site.

Joe,

Stay away from as many of the bells and whistles as you can and don't even think about system testing for a number of years. TradeStation is very expensive but it won't make you a better TA trader. And it's great that you can program conditions and have all the alarms go off but you're also a long way from knowing what those conditions really are for you. Take the time to understand how each indicator is constructed and why there are really very few you need to be concerned about.

You'll need to evolve a personal trading strategy and time frame as you proceed. DON'T assume day trading is right for you. You could find a strategy that's perfect for your knowledge but requires holding positions longer.

Technical analysis is VERY difficult to learn and execute in very short-time frames if you've haven't mastered it in longer ones.

There are professionals in the big institutions who still do their charts by hand. TA is a very powerful method of combining left and right brain activity. Develop the instinct first and add software and systems as you go. The TA software companies haven't necessarily made their products any better as they've added features.
