Japan's PC Sales Gained 62% on Year in Week Ended April 4

Tokyo, April 19 (Bloomberg) -- Personal computer sales at
large electronics stores in Japan gained 62 percent in the week
ended April 4 from the same period a year earlier, the technology
weekly Nikkei Market Access reported.
The value of PCs sold rose 66 percent, benefiting Japan's
largest PC makers NEC Corp., Fujitsu Ltd., IBM Japan Ltd.,
Toshiba Corp. and others, said Nikkei MA, which tracks sales at
about 2,000 electrical stores nationwide.
Nikkei MA monitors sales at stores run by about 55
electrical retailers. The figures cover approximately 25 percent
of Japan's over-the-counter PC sales, and about 10 percent of the
total market.
Private research company IDC Japan Ltd. forecasts that
Japan's domestic shipments of personal computers will rise 10
percent in 1999, the first gain in three years, as a surge in
sales to individual users offsets stifled corporate demand.
Unit sales in the week ended April 4 fell 8.9 percent from
the previous week, the first decline in six weeks, reflecting the
end of PC sales campaigns before the start of the business and
academic year on April 1.
The value of those sales also declined 8 percent from the
previous week.
Sales of PCs to individual customers surged following the
release of Microsoft Corp.'s Windows98 last July, and Apple
Computer Inc.'s iMac computer last August.
The average price of PCs sold at electrical stores in the
week edged marginally higher to 236,130 yen ($2,001), from
233,775 yen the previous week.
By model, notebook computers led the price increase, as
stores finished selling off inventory from fiscal year-end sales.
The following table gives Nikkei MA's figures for the
percentage changes for PC sales from the previous week and from
the same week a year earlier.

*OT OT* My Dell Dimension 450 has lost eight minutes on its clock this week. Does anyone know what that means? Am I in danger of losing information on my hard drive? I will call Dell later today, but was hoping a techie could explain what might be going on? Thanks in advance
