Edamo, re:<< ..agree all boxmakers offer the same configurations...but the indirect sales method attempts to "guess" what the consumer wants...and if the wrong "guess"...inventory backup at the retail level which gets stale....kinda like going to the grocer and asking him if he can add raisins to the corn flakes he has on the shelf....if he can't you'll buy raisin bran from someone else...>> what you are saying is that a company is screwing up with respect to the marketing and sales of their commodity. IMO, being direct, or indirect, or a hybrid model doesn't change the fact that a pc is still a commodity. I believe a company needs a proprietary product in order to avoid the commodity situation. I think drug companies with patent protection are good examples of selling a proprietary product.
