New Encoder Stress Pattern Reveals Differences Among Digital/HDTV MPEG -2 Encoders 04/19/1999 Business Wire (Copyright (c) 1999, Business Wire) PRINCETON, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 19, 1999-- Test Shows Weaknesses in Any Encoder with Fast, Visual Check; Allows Broadcasters, Production Houses to Monitor Performance Sarnoff Corporation has announced the availability of its Encoder Stress Pattern, a video test pattern for the digital television age. The announcement was made today at the National Association of Broadcasters Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Encoder Stress Pattern allows managers and technicians at broadcast and post-production facilities to: -- quickly evaluate and compare the quality of competing digital and high-definition television (DTV/HDTV) hardware encoders -- pinpoint areas where given encoders make compromises in the way they display images as encoding bitrates are reduced -- tune encoders to maximize image quality. The test consists of a special video sequence. Users simply feed it through the encoder, decode the output, and observe a pattern on the screen. No additional measurement or analytical equipment is required. "This is pure, concentrated evil that will reveal whatever weaknesses an MPEG -2 encoder has," said Charlie Wine, Distinguished Member of Technical Staff. "It is designed so that no encoder can produce a perfect result. This approach lets you see the limits of any encoder you test, giving you a true basis for comparison." "The Sarnoff Encoder Stress Pattern is almost as easy to use as the old NTSC test patterns, but it's much more revealing and more versatile," said Dean Malmstrom, Group Head, DTV Professional Products. The test pattern sequence places high demands on specific capabilities of the encoder, forcing it to code video for which it has limited resources. The results displayed on screen give a clear indication of how the encoder handled this overload. How the Stress Test Wrings Out Encoders Sarnoff's Encoder Stress Pattern is a 32-field sequence that displays 17 still and moving elements on screen simultaneously. Each element is designed to reveal shortcomings in specific MPEG -2 encoding functions. This helps determine encoder performance limits in such areas as spatial resolution, judder and dropped frames, quantization artifacts, edge smoothness and sharpness, horizontal and vertical motion, and circular motion. The pattern also shows the encoder's ability to properly superimpose station identification logos, or "bugs," on the images. The Encoder Stress Pattern is based on Sarnoff's extensive experience with digital video and MPEG encoding. It sells for $8,000.
