LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 19, 1999--Media 100 Inc. (NASDAQ:MDEA), announced today a strategic relationship with IBM(R) to bring real-time MPEG-2 support to its product lines. With the growth in popularity of digital broadcast technologies, DVD-Video for the home, DVD-ROM in business, and video on the Internet, MPEG-2 is rapidly gaining importance as a high-quality audio/video distribution format. The recent introduction by IBM of low-cost, single-chip, MPEG-2 encoders and decoders allows MPEG-2 integration with video production systems. Future MPEG-2 solutions from Media 100 will enable video production professionals to quickly and cost-effectively re-purpose their content for these new distribution mediums.
The video editing requirements of DVD and web-based content creators will benefit from the combination of Media 100's DirectEdit(tm) and InstantMedia(tm) technologies with MPEG-2 support. These technologies allow video producers to easily create affordable high-quality output and provide seamless compatibility with applications like Photoshop(R) and After Effects(R) from Adobe(R), Director(tm) from Macromedia(R), and 3DStudio MAX(tm) from Discreet Logic(R).

As part of its commitment to developing and supporting advanced, practical industry standards, Media 100 is a charter member and active participant in the Pro-MPEG Forum. The Pro-MPEG Forum is comprised of a group of manufacturers and video and graphics professionals dedicated to optimizing interoperability between MPEG-based products. "There are many variations in MPEG-2 solutions in the market," said David Acker, SMPTE Fellow and Media 100 principal engineer. "Our hardware implementations will reflect the superior image quality that is the backbone of Media 100's video architecture while maintaining the compatibility with industry standards."

"Media 100 has long been an active supporter of audio and video standards. Our simultaneous support of DV, SDI, and Betacam SP gives our customers the flexibility to use virtually any input device," said Mike Savello, Media 100 director of product marketing. "Adding real-time MPEG-2 input and output to our systems is a natural extension that empowers Media 100 users to be even more creative and productive."

"Media 100's products have a reputation for superior image quality and enjoy high customer satisfaction. Therefore, IBM is very pleased that our encoder and decoder chips meet Media 100's high standards and will be used in Media 100's MPEG-2 products", stated Don Leake, Manager of Sales and Marketing for IBM's Digital Video Product's Group.

LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 18, 1999--At NAB'99, Avid(R) Technology, Inc. and Sony Corporation today announced that they have agreed to create an alliance to pursue the development of new post-production and broadcast news products.

Under this alliance, the two companies intend to execute an agreement to work together to create an Avid nonlinear news editing system that will interoperate with Sony's new line of MPEG -based broadcast equipment. Designed on the Avid NewsCutter(R) digital nonlinear news editing system, the system would provide all the features and capabilities of the NewsCutter product and would support the MPEG format. The two companies also intend to collaborate to enable the current NewsCutter product to interoperate with Sony's DVCAM equipment, in addition to its current DV capabilities.

Finally, Avid and Sony intend to collaborate on 24P post-production workflow solutions for High Definition television as well as High Definition solutions for broadcast news.

"We are pleased to announce our alliance with Sony, the leader of the broadcasting industry," stated Bill Miller, chairman and CEO of Avid Technology, Inc. "By combining Sony's MPEG expertise and technology with Avid's world-class NewsCutter nonlinear technology, we can provide our customers a great MPEG news editing solution. As broadcasters adopt MPEG -based systems, this alliance will allow us to provide them with a seamless method of acquisition, editing and playback for the entire news production process."

"Avid is the number one company for nonlinear editing systems," said Mitsuru Ohki, president of Sony Corporation's Broadcasting and Professional Systems Company. "Our collaboration with Avid is what the market requested, and I believe that many of our customers will benefit from the Sony-Avid alliance. Together with Avid, Sony aims to create an efficient production environment by utilizing DV and MPEG compression technologies, as well as to promote the future growth of HDTV.

"Ever since Sony launched the concept of an ' MPEG World' at last year's NAB, the industry responded with the establishment of a Pro- MPEG Forum to spread the use of MPEG throughout the industry. Avid's commitment today further strengthens MPEG 's role as an industry-wide standard for the future," added Ohki.

The Sony compatible Avid MPEG editing solution would initially be available as an upgrade to the Avid NewsCutter family of products.
