someone help me out here.....

CPQ has $4 billion in cash and NO long-term debt at end of fiscal '98?

spinning off Alta-Vista will generate no additional cash for Compaq.

so what is the probability that Compaq will announce a buyback at their current cash level?

i'd love to see a buyback, but i don't see it happening. I guess I could see $250 million, but I don't think they want to clutter up their balance sheet and run low on cash, considering they just came out and said that they want to keep it clean. i think instead there will be more jobs lost as part of a cost-savings restructuring plan, including the spin-off of Alta-Vista (Alta-Vista, shopping.com, and Zip2).
