J Maz, IMHO CPQ needs to segment its product offerings. White box for $599; Black box for $799; Rosewood/gold for $1,999. When products are segmented you can put them into separate channels without any conflict.

The audio people did it and did it well. Maybe Ben will take a hint from Sony.

All,
Yes, I agree... segment market and CLEARLY offer products for each segment. But EP has in the last two years pushed the issue of the CHEAP PC. Why? Where was this strategy going? Did he hope to pre-empt the likes of e-Machines, Microwerks, HP, IBM, GTW from meeting the challenge? Clearly it has worked to cause IBM a big loss, but did he not anticipate the likes of e-Machines? Still, what was the goal here? DId he have in mind the all purpose commodity Windows CE/cell phone/all purpose solution for $300 ready to go when the PC became the cell phone commodity? It just doesn't make sense for the guy who led CPQ from 3 bil to 30+bil in 5 years to drive CPQ into a dead end position? So what really went wrong; what was the original plan and is it still off track?
