Snoop-Poop Your PC

Thanks for pointing out the interesting article.

One thing it didn't cover was the 'Paranoia' option in 'Tweak-UI'.

For those who aren't familiar with 'Tweak-UI', its a utility included on your Win98 CD. You install it in your Control Panel and it takes care of some of this stuff automatically if you want it to.

Cheers, PW.

Hi Mark ---

I'm not wanting to enter into a debate about the relative merits of why this part and why not this one.

You are good to share tips, and I appreciate them.

Here are the components of the box I'm currently working on constructing and prices .....
----

CPU --- 400mz Celeron (will overclock it to at least 450mz)--- $99
CPU fans --- Artic Cooler --- $45
Case fan --- extra one (making 2) --- $4
MB --- ABIT BH6 --- $86
RAM --- 128mg PC100 SDRAM 8ns --- $117
Video Cards --- AGP 4mg ATI Charger and PCI 4mg ATI Charger --- $48 ($24 ea)
Sound Card --- Creative Sound Blaster 16bit ISA --- $18
Speakers --- Altec Lansing ACS-43AW --- $32
Modem --- Lucent Technologies 56k V90 Data/Fax/Voice --- $22
NetWork Card --- Encore ESL 816TB RJ-45 connect --- $10
Floppy Drive --- Sony --- $15
ZIP Drive --- Iomega IDE 100mg --- $70
Tape Drive --- Iomega Ditto 2G TapeBackup --- $10
Hard Drive --- Seagate Medalist 6.4G UltraDMA/EIDE 9.5ms --- $115
CD-ROM Drive --- Mitsumi 32x IDE 85ms --- $35
Monitors --- Two ea AOC Spectrum 7GLR 1600x1200 .26dpi --- $418 ($209 ea)
Keyboard --- Sejin --- $15
WheelScroll Mouse --- Genius Wheel two button --- $7
Case --- Premier w/250 watt PS --- $35

As I said, this is just the one I'm doing .... it is NOT the best, or the cheapest, or the most costly, but it provides pretty good results for a relatively inexpensive bottom line .....
I've used all these components in other boxes and I feel comfortable with them fitting together well.

As to the speed of Win95 vs Win98 --- I install 98 using a custom install (available to anyone, nothing special) as opposed to normal install ----and find that this cuts way down on the loading time at boot and seems to speed up application (perhaps imagination here ...ggg)

I would like to have any constructive advice/recco/observations from the thread without getting into a *lengthy* discussion about relative merits of other products UNLESS they're better at lesser cost OR give a lot more bang for the buck .... gggggg
