I haven't read enough to comment comfortably on all of this so anything I say is probably full of emotional holes but then I probably represent the average American-- (Politically Ignorant), but it seems that there was no clear goal--more a nebulous goal of intimidating Milosovich enough to "stop". ANd it didn't work, and now we're stuck because we hadn't in advance decided how far to go, just what this would take, and whether we were willing to do what it takes. We renege on the limits we had placed. I don't want emotional pleas from my government, forget "feeling others' pain; I want a clear sound policy set out and the ability to carry it out- AND the ability to admit when it's wrong. The problem with "compromise" is that the parties involved seldom will. As The Policeman, we are taking sides. In this particular conflict, I wonder if either side could have been the victim and either side the sadistic torturer portrayed on the news. Would the sobbing men be the rapists had the power been more on their side? Setting up boundaries, drawing borders hasn't been successful for the Israelis and Palestinians either. Man is not by nature very compromising.(Put us in charge?) Thing is, I agree with you---I just don't see it as possible. ANd I have NO faith in our current leadership- Dem Rep or anything in between.
