Why would I want to start a business in a field which has shown itself non condusive to profitability?

And when I say profitable, I don't mean profitable to the CEO's wallet. Running a money losing business is no challenge.

Kis did you look into dclk's business plan etc. really? I agree their technical implementation is probably simple. But the situation with the dclk network is such that the more sites they sign up, the more sites they sign up. If I started a dclk clone company tomorrow, with the same technology, there would be no way I could be successful based on the critical mass that dclk already has. Customers are looking for the network of sites that are already there in order to classify and target customers to get directed to their site. The only way anyone can match dclk today is if amzn or some other supersite starts their own network, and even then it would be tough.

Auctions are the same way, a critical mass kind of thing.
