At the very least, ERICY must appear in principle (and maybe practice) to continue to push W-CDMA lest their GSM customers believe that ERICY either (i) sold them down the river in the Q deal or (ii) was selling them a bill of goods all along (probably both, and we know (ii) to be true). The definitive answer to this question must lie in answers to 1: whether W-CDMA exists in fact as well as theory (the NOKA press release the other day appears to assume this mode exists) and 2: whether W-CDMA alone is backward compatible to GSM without burdensome expense to the GSM operators.
