>Maybe we should be allowed to carry guns with us at all times, and at any age?<

I'll have to presume you're venting frustration with that remark.
Gun ownership and gun carry are two different issues with two distinct "standards of care" that apply to them. Gun ownership is not to be taken lightly, and gun carry rightly has sharp legal restrictions on when and how the licensee is allowed to show or use the weapon. I sure don't advocate arming the "good" kids in that school.

>Other 1st world
nations seem to be in favor of stricter gun control laws.<

And this means what here? I am hearing an unspoken syllogism: " ...and this is a good thing". We are not other 1st world nations. We are not Japan, Great Britain, or even Canada.

The problem this thread grapples with is school violence, not gun rights. While I posted to resist the fallacious assumption that gun control equals violence control, I'd like to see more debate of how to stem the tide of school murder sprees, with or without guns. The kids used shotguns and deployed pipe bombs. Had guns not been available, I have no doubt these same kids would have shifted to "plan B" - iron bars and/or improvised incendiary weapons.

In Dodge City, Kansas in the 1870's and 1880's everyone carried firearms and the crime rate was nil, no fool criminal would think to rob anyone if (s)he thought everyone was armed and ready to return fire... Dodge City was well known in its time and remembered today for its zero tolerance of criminals... just a thought.....
