IMHO Most of those stores seem to be leased and the fixtures don't look like they are worth much. Why not just sell it off and get out of that part of the business. They can move their inventory that doesn't sell to the the mega stores. Seems easy enough to do. The other alternative is to turn them into deep discount bookstores.

Re: Waldenbooks positioning: How about kids books? These stores are large enough to carry a superstore selection of kids books. And kids books might be a good target for the mall crowd.

They could turn the Waldenbooks stores/locations into Brentano's. Brentanos used to be one of my favorite bookstores prior to the
superstore concept caught on.
