A leetle calculator error. RIG's earnings are actually 35% higher than 1998 (adjusted for the .14 one-time gain in 1998), not 27%.

Peter, it is very odd that RIG didn't do better. It has been such an earnings standout within the sector. SLB doesn't do as well as RIG and then has a bigger gain. What is even stranger is that RIG's earnings were close to 3 times SLB's but RIG sells for half the price. This for two companies in essentially the same business though SLB is much more diversified. Must be that mysterious advantage of S&P 500 membership.
