NEW YORK, April 22 (Reuters) - MediaOne Group Inc soared in after-hours trading Thursday after AT&T Corp (T - news) announced a surprise $58 billion bid for the company.

MediaOne traded at 82 in the post-session, up 12-1/2 from the regular close. AT&T traded at 57 on the Instinet broker system, in line with the regular close.

The AT&T bid pits the telecommunications giant against Comcast Corp (CMCSA - news), a rival suitor for MediaOne.

Comcast traded at 70, up 3-13/16 from the regular close. In subsequent dealings AT&T traded higher at 64-1/2.

Sybase Inc (SYBS - news) rose in post-session activity after the company reported it earned a profit of $0.07 per share in the first quarter versus a year-earlier loss. Sybase traded at 9-1/4, up 11/16 from the regular close.

VeriSign Inc (VRSN - news) traded at 146, down 3/16 from the regular close. The company reported a first quarter loss of $0.08 per share, narrower than the year-ago loss of $0.27 per share.

Atmel Corp (ATML - news) traded at 23, up 3/16 from the regular close. The company reported first quarter earnings of $0.17 per share before a charge, compared to $0.27 a year ago.

The New York Stock Exchange said after-hours session one volume was 2,673,000 shares compared with 2,262,900 on Wednesday. Session two volume was 6,915,730 shares compared with 3,316,506 on Wednesday.
