Our problem seems to be that the schools are expected to fill the vacuum left by excremental parents far too often. In the case of which we speak, I suspect that there was a degree of mental illness involved. Most parents don't recognize it in their kids or - because it is so difficult to accept the possibility - rationalize it to a large degree. It is difficult to accept that anyone could commit such heinous acts with absolutely no apparent repugnance or remorse for their own actions.
