What benefit does MSFT get to mess up with AT&T?
Microsoft is sitting on sums of cash beyond imagination without the slightest idea as to what to do with it except to just keep buying stuff related to the future of technology.
I'm sure they were very happy to have their piece of the MSFT/Comcast/UMG/RR group which might have been a dominant force in internet delivery. Suddenly AT&T has smashed the dream.
I could easily imagine MSFT forking over another few billion $ to help Comcast top T's offer. I wonder if we will see UMG trading *above* either offer price in expectation of an all out bidding war.

No way MSFT will bid for UMG--I don't think they want to OWN the cable infrastructure, MSFT just wants them to utilize their tech, i.e. software, etc.

MFST's investment in CMCSA/K was to put some cash into upgrading the cable plant and roll out broadband cable. MSFT's ultimate agenda is--same story--to get everyone to use MSFT-developed tech. MSFT has their hand in every pot--recent investments in international cable cos like TCLI and UIHIA are case-in-point.

In the end, MSFT and T will decide this matter. I would not be surprised, although I know RTev disagrees with me, to see T win this bidding war for UMG but MSFT get major concessions/future considerations from T as payback for not helping Comcast outbid T. There is a lot more going on here than meets the eye.
