DJ SatCon Tech To Design Circuitry For Hughes Satellite Sys

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (Dow Jones)--SatCon Technology Corp.'s (SATC) Film Microelectronics Inc. agreed to design the substrate circuitry for the radio frequency amplifier section of Hughes Electronics Corp.'s (GMH) new Spaceway satellite system user terminals.
Terms of the contract weren't disclosed.
In a press release Thursday, SatCon said Spaceway is a global broadband satellite network that provides high-bandwidth and high speed communications for broadband, Internet and multimedia applications.
The substrate will be used in the ground-based user terminals that will be installed with antennas in homes and offices similar to those currently used by Hughes' DirectTV service.
Hughes will market the system, which SatCon said will be faster than current cable systems or telephone lines, through DirectTV, a digital entertainment television service.
SatCon said Hughes is investing $1.4 billion in the Spaceway system.
SatCon makes and sells power and energy manufacturing products for telecommunications, silicon wafer manufacturing, factory automation, aircraft, satellites and automotive applications.
