My main point is proprietary iron (Sun boxes). But iron is of no use without an operating system so it's an integral part of our discussions. Not being able to run NT on my iron limits my future possible uses of that iron in my business.

the argument that PC's are getting more powerful and will threaten Sun has been around forever. The shift from running a database or in house applications (kind of like those triangles..) which would be a yardstick for measuring PC performance to that of running a large scale ecommerce site or a service provider network is not matched by the improvements in PC's or their Operating Systems. PC systems are years behind in availability feaures like clustering for availability AND scalability, and the ability to add memory or cpu and reconfigure the system without bringing it down.

Given an infinite timeline maybe their trajectories would meet given the faster ramp up possible with mass market componenents - but the world is tilting more Sun's way lately and speeds and feeds alone arent the only reason why.
