Your point made perfect theoretical sense, but in reality the requirement to support multiple OSes lies so low on an evaluation checklist that the odds for a decision to be influenced by this requirement is practically nil. Technologies move in lockstep in each generation. How practical is Win95 running on a 386-33MHz? On PCs how often does one intend to upgrade the motherboard+processor only and then end up upgrading the whole system?

The highest item on the checklist at this point in choosing between NT and Unix on the server side is which one can do the heavy lifting reliably and just look at Sun and you know who the winner is. On the client side for consumers, Windows OS wins hands down as a sole contender - at least until such time a thin webtone device becomes practical. On the professional client side, it's a highly contested war with each battle mainly decided based on a client's targeted market.

Go ahead advise your clients to sacrifice the best price performance and reliability for their apps in favor of a box potentially able to run a variety of OSes. Just make sure you will stick around when it comes the time for them to upgrade their technologies. (I'm almost certain they will upgrade their consultant too in the process :)
