DULLES, Virginia--America Online may find itself facing a formidable competitor for Internet customers if AT&T purchases MediaOne, analysts said.

AT&T wants to buy cable-television company MediaOne as part of its strategy to offer local phone and Internet services through cable-TV lines. The purchase could give AT&T-controlled @Home access to more than one in four U.S. households.

The proposed $62.5 billion purchase also could lead to the teaming of @Home with cable Internet service rival Road Runner, which MediaOne partially owns through a joint venture. Customers are showing increased interest for the faster service. AOL has been lobbying federal regulators to force cable companies to open up their networks to competition.

"AT&T through @Home and MediaOne would have a stranglehold on the cable-Internet product," said Scott Appleby, an analyst at ABN Amro, who rates AOL "outperform." "Broader is better, because with a bigger pipe, you can get more content to the desktop faster."

Couple of good articles from the Yahoo thread. ACTV gets some good press in the first one.
