A quick note on the CIH virus:

Make no mistake, it is a nasty one. I doubt it's as widespread as the Melissa virus was, but it's much more damaging. It can rewrite the boot code of your hard drive (kiss your data bye-bye), and even overwrite your system's BIOS code (kiss your motherboard bye-bye).

There is no need to keep your computer off on the 26th though. You can simply change the system date to the 27th on Sunday, and change it back on Tuesday. Although it might screw up your email date, it's s small price to pay considering the alternative.

hi carolyn,

okay, let's look at your antivirus plan. reinstalling the "big" program and qualifying for upgrades sounds good. what i'm focusing on is that you said your pc wouldn't run right with the av prog on it. i have had similar probs with installs screwing up my system and i've had to remove them. but then i learned the correct way to download and install apps. a little prep work goes a long, long way towards insuring that the install (and subsequent operation of your machine) will be seamless. prior to installing new software, here are a few things to do:

1. clear all cache, history and temp internet files.
2. defrag your hard drive.
3. turn off everything that is running in the background except explorer.

as for deleting email without opening it… that particular dilemma was driving me bonkers for awhile until someone gave me the simple solution. my messenger (netscape's email) window has three panes. one on the left and two vertically stacked on the right. this configuration can be changed in preferences, btw. click on the dimpled bar with the two small arrows on it at the bottom of the top right pane. this will turn the right side into one large pane. from this configuration you can then highlight any incoming unopened email, then right-click it and select ‘delete message' from the drop down menu. it will go to the trash folder, where you can 86 it along with all the other trash. when you want to go back to the three pane configuration, just click on the dimpled bar again.

btw, back to antivirus. keep in mind that you can go to a vendor's website and download their products. here's the symantec url for their antivirus 5.0

symantec.com

good luck!

on 4/24 in #reply-9119036 you wrote:

"Several weeks ago someone was trying to find out how to delete emails in Netscape without opening them. Did an answer ever appear here? I have version 4.05, and going to try to download 4.08 today. Anyway, I have to click once on the message, it turns blue and opens on that one click. I would like to be able to delete without opening."

so... did we fix it? #reply-9121487
