Eric: Basically...I agree with your viewpoint although I would keep the Palm and form a stronger alliance with Microsoft.

<<Claflin will run all of 3Com's networking product divisions, as well as other departments, and Benhamou will have responsibility for finance, partnerships, and other areas, including the Palm Computing division..."

...shows that 3COMS has already separated the working divisions and
management responsibilities between Benhamou and Claflin. The logical next step is to sell the Palm Computing division, it's technology and have Benhamou step aside.>>

This org announcement is a year old - Claflin now has Palm as well as Network Systems and NICS/Modems

<< The key for 3COM's board will be to develop an overall business strategy for the next five years, hire the key management to methodically implement this strategy and detail this plan (and results) to Wall Street on an on-going basis.>>

This plan has been announced - it's called Converged Networking and is focused on enabling combined voice/video/data across traditional enterprise LAN/WAN gear as well as Small Office and Consumer. The key with this is to get top line growth from the emerging markets centered around convergence (broadband, VOIP, wireless, handheld) while migrating out of analog modems.

<<.. but what ever change is made, it must be made clear to the new CEO (and middle management) that these changes will result in a much stronger and more profitable 3COM.>>

Not defending COMS stock performance., but COMS is still pretty profitable - $90MM last quarter with $1.7BB in the bank. What COMS has to do is have consistent and predictable earnings with top line revenue growth - this is the main cause of the stocks' punishment. To get there the emerging markets and convergence play need to take off.
