don't know if anyone has seen this... this is an old article does anyone know if he still holds a position in ampex ? Return of the Tech Zombies
Mr. Koe's fund has an average compound annual return of 25% since its founding 4.5 years ago. It shot up 41% last quarter, based largely on his concentrated position in Xicor. This company is typical of the orphaned holdings that Mr. Koe prefers. He now holds a strong position in Ampex, a maker of digital storage systems primarily for video. In Mr. Koe's view, "If it were a two year-old company, its stock would be trading at $20." Ampex's CEO, Ed Bramson, completed an LBO and then mounted a huge reorganization. The head-count is down from 7,000 to 500, real estate and a division are being sold off, the product line has been cut from hundreds of offerings to only 16 in the last two years, and 80% of revenues are from products less than two years old. The company's products have found new vertical markets, including a large account with Visa. herring.com

Followup Random Notes....Re the possibility of Ampex taking equity stakes or sharing revenues in return for production services or costs with attractive web tv ventures.......how about this? Besides production services or cash, Ampex also has state of the art technology/patents etc. Maybe the new Ampex will continue to license to the consumer electronics giants, but also be willing to license to promising startups in exchange for an equity stake. Seed their licensed and patent protected technology across the world wide web. Instead of see you in court, Mitsu, it'll be licensing, taking ownership in lean, hungry entrepreneurs. ..........

Bramson has made happen everything he has alluded to in previous letters. No reason to think that the same won't happen with the video game business that Ampex thinks use their technology now. Maybe the way it will happen will be to host some video hotshots and license to them bleeding edge video technology for equity and turn them loose on the web......
