The portal phenomenon is particularly puzzling. Essentially it's as if we're back in the 1950s and the hot topic is which channel your new TV would tune to when you turned it on with the theory being that TV purchasers would be too dumb or lazy to realize that the TV contained a channel change control. I confess I have a hard time trying to grasp the logic of this belief when it seems obvious that "about:blank" is the only appropriate "start page" for any browser.

The P. T. Barnum approach to user entrapment may show short-term "results" but it hardly seems likely to have any staying power. I would not expect MSFT to try to push this particular rope for long.
