Indeed, a johnny-rotten week for humor, even for human existence.

Biologically speaking, the reason for the parent salmon's demise is to return the nutrients it is tying up to the water for use by their offspring. Another is to keep them from eating their children, sort of a forward abortion for those who get by with it.

I suppose you are right that the salmon does indeed feel some pleasure in its reproductive act. Chalk one up for Lorrie.

They are truly admirable creatures because nothing, nothing, nothing, deters them from their goal until they are dead. They are among the great wonders and mysteries of life. On that we agree.

If humans were so focused we would be visiting the stars.
