Clarence,

Your data might not be unrecoverable -- don't forget about programs like PowerQuest's (although you might not be feeling totally confident with their products about now) Lost & Found. I used it successfully (thanks to ZP for the suggestion) on a partition that I mistakenly formatted. (Although, I did have a glitch: After recovering my data I deleted that partition and subsequently lost access to the exact amount of space of which that partition was comprised. PowerQuest said that such a phenomenon was not "an issue" with L&F -- what was I to say?)

I think that L&F has to operate within the context of a partition so it may not work for you if your partitions are gone. You may want to give PQ a call.

My KOT install has disappeared and won't boot.

It does sound like you toasted the Master Boot Record or the File Allocation Tables..or? naturally I am just guessing as usual.

Hopefully Lost and Found is the right approach. I have no experience with the program but it does sound like it will at least recover files.

The best solution would be to 'fix' the MBR or FAT ..restoring the drive to it's previous working condition. I do not know if L&F does that or if it just recovers files. It is probably in the documentation.

PowerQuest seems like a fried and foe (I caught the spelling error but decided to leave it<g>). Can not live without it but It looks like we have to learn the best way to live with it.

It sounds a little like my go around with PM. But a little more complicated...I only had an OS installation to preserve.

Do you have some free space on one of your drives that can be formatted FAT in case you need to restore files to a FAT partition?

Lost and Found

I read the description on the Web site. It does not look like it will repair the FAT or MBR. They prefer to focus on data recovery.

It does look like you will be able to recover files from the KOT as it is formatted FAT16.

I do not know how you can restore to the KOT drive itself as they provide no utility to restore the function of the drive. So my guess is you will have to make some FAT space available on one of your other drives....without messing them up in the process...how 'bout one of the ROMOs? What size are they? greater than 8.4 gig?
