eBAY is exactly doing everything they can to widen its services. They are trying very hard to make themselves comprehensive. They know full well they should not and can not box themselves in a pure "auction" model. In a not so remote future, eBay will be perceived as a pure e-commerce house, not just an auction house. Their business model will encompass
1) Person to person Auction
2) Fixed price retail (you can still call it auction if you like)
3) Business to person Auction
4) US regional classifieds (Take business from local newspaper)
5) International regional classifieds (Such as UK, Australia and etc).

Basically, they will do everything except 2 things: warehousing and delivery of products to your home. EBAY will simply become a giant aggregator of global business transaction, even buying and selling companies. Ever heard of the recent 3 mill bid for Wang's Webazine on eBay? EBAY's business model is extremely scalable that Nothing, absolute nothing is inappropriate to go on eBay. Of course, not Guns, fire arms and illegal stuff.

Amazon is going after an online version of Wal-Mart, Costco model.
But I feel eBay's model is better. And I think AMZN is quick to realize that as well.
