What we are seeing is a growing turf war among the first tier internet companies: leading search/portal yahoo getting into etailing and auctions; leading isp/content provider aol getting into etailing and through ebay, auctions (to some degree); leading etailer amzn getting into auctions; and leading online auctioneer ebay getting into fixed price etailing.

Of course, the size and topography of the battlefield is constantly expanding and changing, so it is by no means a zero-sum game. B2B ecommerce is the one part of the war zone that these four companies have yet to venture into in a focused way. Eventually, each will be left standing, as the skills of their generals and the size of the playing field ensures. We have merely been discussing which of the four will ultimately claim the largest turf.
