rudedog: The 1,500 was from my memory. I thought that was the figure discussed at the shareholders meeting or in some other communique in the past week. I must admit that I was surprised that it was so close to completion. However if you say there is still 4,500 to go, that takes it back to where it was in December. My memory tells me that then the expectation about the European lay-offs were that it would happen in March-June, 1999.

I take your point about the redistribution of staff to the more profitable divisions. In theory one would also expect that rationalisation would also yield scope for more reductions. I think Captain Jack had a good point about an outsider having some advantages in cutting staff and waste. Just so long as he does not cut out the good stuff.
