Michael: Mine is a fifth generation US military family going back to the Civil War. I grew up with guns in my house as a child as did my father, his father, his father and his father before him. There has never even been an accident never mind someone, especially a child, picking up a gun in anger to settle an argument or correct a perceived slight. In addition to gun safety I was also taught some core values such as the sanctity of human life, faith, honor, honesty, duty, service to country and charity and more importantly, my parents set an example. Children learn most powerfully by examples we as parents set for them. I think that's the major difference. Guns have always been available in abundance in our country and it really is too late to put the genie back in the bottle. Children need structure, boundaries and limits and they need to know their parents will enforce them. How could the young man in Littleton, CO have constructed all those bombs and maintained an arsenal of weapons and ammunition without his parents knowledge? How could his parents have missed the hatred and violence he seemed to be so fascinated with? Something is amiss with our priorities in the USA. Bubba Clinton is a good example of the symptoms but he's only a part of the problem. Good parenting might have avoided this situation but I strongly doubt that gun control would make a damn bit of difference. JLA
