Youth Sunday--That must have seemed very ironic as well as being very touching. The kids of today do seem more poised and confident---until you get to watch them up close. They are just as scared and confused as we were-- maybe more so. They just have a better act. Or maybe we did too, and didn't appear as awkward as we felt.

I have spent the day with my boys (and friends in and out)editing a tape of swim meets for the annual sports banquet. Have you ever tried to make a fascinating tape out of a swim meet? Trying to include footage of everyone on the team when you can't tell who anyone is because they all look alike with swimcaps and goggles? ANd every event looks exactly like the one before it anyway? And knowing if you found any close-ups, the girls would be upset that their thighs were jiggling, or their mouths were gasping, and the guys would be upset at being seen in Speedos in front of the football team. And if their kids aren't in a clip, the moms will beat me up. And no one is going to be happy. And for this, we get to pay 90.00 a couple.

Last year, they put decks of cards at each place. Since the thing lasts 4 or 5 hours (I kid you not) this is a good move. I played about 100 hands of solitaire. Every varsity athlete-announced individually, and speeches by the coaches. A cast of thousands. ANd of course no wine. Last year Dan cleverly managed to be out of town that night. It's funny how many dads were.
