Yes, I think in my earlier post I acknowledged that her report even of a rumor, if properly characterized as such, was proper.

A question could be raised as to whether the race to be first, even with a properly characterized rumor, leads to many poor quality news items over time, and thus lowers the value of CNBC as a source.

John,

On the Friday in question, I believe the Dow was near 10080 for the first time just prior to Maria's report. (This is from memory, I don't have a videotape showing the precise time and numbers.)

Maria's report seemed to be the trigger that took the Dow below 10000.

I don't expect Maria or any CNBC reporter to be perfect.

I do expect all of them to be a little more suspicious about rumours or other speculation which is probable to be market moving during the options expiry week. ... and doubly so as we approach triple witching Friday.

Maria got sucked in.

CNBC's viewers got hurt.

In any case, it's probably got more air time on this thread than it's due.

I'm done,
Ian.

There is a difference between reporting that a rumor is moving the market and repeating the rumor.

I feel is it perfectly legitimate to report that there is a rumor circulating about 'such and such' that it has moved the market. Part of what we do is report on market movements and why.

Repeating and reporting rumors are different things.
