Feh - I've read a million stories like that over the years...why does one more make things worse now than ever before?
I'm not saying I agree with the government. But I hardly see one more story like this as evidence that things are worse.
Everyday, in my job, I know I help to enable people to do more, and become more empowered. I see what my company does as an enabling function for millions of individuals.
And don't forget - if people don't fight back, then they didn't want the freedom they had anyway. Freedom is something that you have to be vigilant about. Every time a little is taken away, you may not notice it. But eventually you'll recognize what is happening, and you have to be prepared to take it back. If you don't, then you didn't really want it.

Freeus,

Please don't despair. I share many of your feelings, but I have been gifted with friends, faith, and the years of experience, that can help me put things in perspective.

I remember being given a book, something like Toward a Liberal Education when I was in high school, (in the 50's). It was a collection of essays by famous educators, philosophers, and other pundits professing the value, nature, and purpose of obtaining such an education at the university.

As I scan the scene today I realize that I'm a classical liberal, sharing virtually none of the views of the “modern liberal”. What happened? Well things changed that's what. The modern liberal agenda is offended by nearly all of the positions I read in that “Liberal” book.

I remember my despair a few short years ago because our country faced of the probability that the health care “system” was going to be perfected, uh, “taken over” by the government. It turned out that we were fed a bunch of crap by the media, and if we listened to them we wouldn't know what's really going on.

I remember when President Reagan shook his fist at the Berlin Wall and shouted for Mr. Brezhnev to “tear down this wall!”. I saw that event on the news. All the commentators at that time seemed bewildered by what he said. There was a lot of stammering and conjecture about what he “really” meant. Some seemed even apologetic that they had to report this bazaar behavior. In retrospect we can see it's ok to profess our ideals even when they call for an unlikely outcome.

I recall protesting to anyone who would listen about how grotesque the seizure laws were when the were first initiated years ago under the guise of “fighting organized crime”. Many who thought I was out of line then listen now when they see the results like your example.

So there is hope, we need to stick to the facts and be patient.

Ricardo

PS
Do you know the validity of that story? If I exaggerate, embellish, or otherwise promote an ad hominem argument, I can be dismissed as pressing a reckless agenda. I'm not accusing, just paranoid about the purity of the protagonists for any agenda I support.
