Tax question: suppose someone had bought, say, 100 shares of a company 10 months ago, and 50 shares of the same company 1 month ago. The company has soared. He wants to trade with the last 50 shares and hold the 100 shares at least 2 more months for long term capital gains. In the old days, he would tell his broker "sell the LAST 50 shares I bought," but in the E-Trade scenario there is no way to tell your broker that. So I wonder in that case if the IRS assumes you are selling the First 50, or, you can tell them you are playing with the last 50 as long as you keep the records. Comments?
