I did some community service with the visitor's center .. so you're in luck....albeit it wasnt the voluntary kind

quick rant.. I think ut mba should have stayed at 15 or moved up instead of falling to 18 in us news in world report..

i came across an internal memo to the mba's explaining the drop..

even though starting avg. salary went up, avg. incoming gpa went up, and, and avg gmat went up.. the school was penalized because 36 or so people didnt complete exit survey info on job status.. and thus were counted as unemployed.. (which was a new policy change for this year)... contrast that to mit where they got 100% participation on the exit survey..

also.. what are you looking to specialize in during your 2nd year...

the biggest negative about UT is that you missed Ricky Williams and his heisman season... and regardless of whether you like football or not.. it was a great time to be associated with UT and not some school of lesser quality.. *cough* aTm *cough*

around campus there are no real areas to avoid... the campus is pretty safe from my experience... there;s a real police presence in austin with the utpd (you can't spell STUPID without UTPD), apd, and state troopers... throw in a presidential candidate to guard and you are pretty secure...

but with 50k pple,.. you get some robberies and car theft.. but nothing too major..in the immediate area... just use common sense

dont let the freaks and bums (drag worms) on the drag (guadalupe str) scare ya.. they're harmless and i've yet to see one come onto the campus (a credit to the utpd).. buy your books at the coop... or check the online exchange for used books...

west campus is more of a frat land and more expensive..

if you move away from campus.. I would avoid the riverside street area to the south (cheaper, but my impression is that you are more at risk)... and you'll have to take the bus (blah)... if you go off campus.. add at least 10 minutes to whatever estimate the crack smoking apartment person quotes you as far as the bus travel time...

for austin in general .. the east is the older part.. and i think the north east to central east has more crime problems... but this is relatively removed from campus...

anyway austin rocks.. there's really nothing like 6th street elsewhere...and there's alot to do for everyone (there's a big international student presence on campus.. in addition to all the yahoos-like me-running around)... if you like live muzik. .you're set... did i mention drinking.. and the girls at UT are second to none... and there's lotsa free beer..

i'm pretty sure that there is a two joint minimum in order to be allowed into the city limits... as you can imagine.. austin is really liberal.. but in a good hippie chick kinda way... and if you ever need a break from the cut throat competition of grad skoool... you can always swing by the west mall to see who's protesting what... thumping you on the head with their religion.. or God help us.. performance art...

traffic going into downtown sucks during rush hour (dont be fooled by the elevated express lanes) austin doesnt have much in the way of quick east west transportation...

parking on campus is impossible (you cant drive on campus from 8 to 4:30) and if they build anymore buildings/stadiums (they will) there will only be two non faculty/parking spaces left.. i dont know what garage rates run, i;m sure its not worth it..there is a bus system.. i dont use it... and am not sure how crowded it is... so i recommend living within biking or walking distance of the b school (GSB , CBA, and UTC)... esp. since you'll probably be on campus a good deal....

with a 99% occupancy rate year round... rates may be more than what you are used to elsewhere ... for apartment finding..a nd roommate hunting.. check the Union board listing (in the union) and the roommate wanted binders (union, main desk).. check the kiosks around campus.. otherwise... a great site to check is www.utnet.com which will kick you over to collegestudent.com and there are ton of ads for roommates ..etc... of course you can go through a aparment locator... and check the Daily Texan (free).. dont waste your time looking in the austin american statesman...

workout facilities are really amazing, b skool recruiting facilities had a nice face lift, and the b school computing resources are great (u'll have to get a laptop as you well know, Dell of course).. if you live near campus.. you'll want to shop at HEB to the north of campus... and there are a million cool shops to check out...

i;m probably leaving out alot of good stuff that i take for granted.. but will come to severely miss as i move to hell.. err houston...
