You can't dismiss it either. Look at it this way: violence is the result of many causes, none of which are controlled. Maybe economic conditions, maybe popular culture, maybe population density, ....

The real question is what affect any one of these parameters has on the output requires careful statistical study. In a laboratory setting you would not study dozens of parameters simultaneously without adequate controls, but that is precisely the kind of thing that social science is up against all of the time. Additionally it has the added problem of not being able to manipulate the parameters at will. And to cap it off, it has the added problem of not dealing with stable models, which means that reproducibility is always questionable.

That makes it easy to "data mine", which is exactly what Shalom has done.
