Missing from these reports is the behind the scenes battle.

This is a war between Bill Gates (and his buddy Paul Allen) vs T.

MSFT, when it invested in Comcast, got the right to demand that Comcast kick ATHM off its cable lines starting soon (I think it is in May). They must have done that for a reason.

MSFT has now become the tail that wags the Comcast dog. MSFT is also in a position to blackmail T (Do what I say T, or I'll cut ATHM off the Comcast cable!). If Comcast bought Media One, it would be a major blow to T. 40% of RoadRunner would go to MSFT and the ability to install it (or any other item they want) on Comcast + UMG.

So with Comcast strongly under MSFT influence, there is nothing ahead but trouble for T. T has to buy UMG at whatever the cost. Likewise, if MSFT loses this battle it would do great damage for any attempt they had at gaining a lion's share of the cable.

I am sure MSFT + Paul Allen will do whatever they can to try and offer more money. AOL will gladly be the attack dog against T but they are a starting to be ignored.

Hopefully, UMG will see that turning the cable/phone business over to MSFT is not a good idea. They are not too experienced at that stuff and it would be a god-awful mess trying to roll out a worldwide cable/phone business with MSFT in charge.
