MediaOne® Launches Telephone Service to Los Angeles Area Homes Feature-Rich, Low-Cost Service Marks Latest Addition to MediaOne's Broadband Service Offerings, which Include Cable Television and Internet Access EL SEGUNDO, CA - MediaOne*, the Broadband services arm of MediaOne Group (NYSE:UMG) today announced it has begun providing local telephone service to Culver City area residents through its introduction of MediaOne Digital Telephone Service that, for the first time, offers customers a choice in local telephone service carriers. This new service is provided over MediaOne's Broadband network and offers a full spectrum of calling features, top-notch service and line quality. MediaOne Digital Telephone Service is provided over the company's state-of-the-art hybrid fiber optic/coaxial cable (HFC) or "Broadband" network, which also brings Los Angeles-area consumers quality cable television service and high-speed Internet access. MediaOne began offering telephone service to more than 35,000 homes this week, and plans to make the service available to 254,000 homes by the end of the year. "The deployment of our high-speed Internet access service MediaOne Express has shown us that our Broadband architecture is the best platform for providing consumers with technically advanced offerings like telephony," said Jan Peters, president and CEO of MediaOne. "And our ability to launch MediaOne Digital Telephone Service and provide customers with a reliable core cable television product is a direct result of our investment in our Broadband network." "MediaOne Digital Telephone Service represents a milestone for Los Angeles consumers and for competition in the telecommunications marketplace," said Greg Braden, vice president of Telephony at MediaOne. "We are very proud that our Broadband network is first to deliver customers a choice in local telephone service. This is precisely the kind of competition Congress envisioned when it passed The Telecommunications Act two years ago." MediaOne Digital Telephone Service is compatible with any household's existing telephones and wiring and offers the full spectrum of popular calling features available today, including Voice Mail, Call Forwarding, Last Call Return (*69) and Caller ID. In addition, MediaOne's local telephone service packages will include 500 minutes of free local toll calls. MediaOne Digital Telephone Service customers will be able to choose from among three service packages: · One telephone line including Caller ID, Call Waiting, Call Forwarding and Speed Dialing for $39.95 a month. The comparable package from other telephone providers is up to $75.00 a month. · Two telephone lines – one with all features – is a total of $54.95 a month. The equivalent package from other providers is up to $110.00 a month · Both MediaOne telephone lines loaded with the full array of features cost $59.95 a month, the equivalent would be up to $185.00 from other carriers. Each package includes all the calling features a customer could need or want plus 500 minutes of free local toll minutes. For no additional charge, these packages include: · 500 minutes of free local toll calls per line · A wider free local calling zone · Free installation · The ability to keep their existing telephone numbers Voice mail is available for an additional $6.95 a month on each line and MediaOne customers in the Los Angeles area will have the option of subscribing to long distance service at the low price of 10 cents a minute for state-to-state calls plus a monthly service fee of $3.95. MediaOne plans to introduce other package and discount services designed to provide additional value and benefit to customers later this year in Culver City. In addition, MediaOne Digital Telephone Service will be available to non-cable customers and will be rolled out during the course of the year in parts of Los Angeles. MediaOne is currently more than half way through a major network upgrade that will continue in its service areas across the country through the end of the decade. When complete, the company's upgraded networks will be able to deliver enhanced video, digital voice and high-speed data services to millions of consumers who live in MediaOne service areas.
