Hi Mike:

A few minor comments on your DSL list:

a) I would add ORCTF (Orckit), and (indirectly)
AFCI, since DLC deployment goes together with
DSL deployment.

b) Of course, among the non pure plays you would
have to add some of the usual suspects such as CSCO
or NT.

c) Why isn't Adtran a DSL pure play?

d) Companies which make DSL silicon might be worth
considering. Unfortunately, TXN and LU are too big,
BRCM is too expensive, and LEVL is already accounted
for. That would leave CNXT, but I don't follow it.

Best regards,

Bernard Levy

Mike, You might take a closer look at Pairgain. While they were in the past driven by first generation HDSL, going forward they have two dsl technologies that seem to hit sweet spots. One is Avidia, which combines several capabilities in one ADSL box. The other is HDSL2, which give HDSL capability (ie., T1) over a single twisted pair--very attractive to telcos trying to maximize return on installed copper.

Pairgain is, according to many analysts, coming up to a hockey stick rise in earnings. Although the sharp rise in share price might be several months away.

Mike:

I've been following closely the efforts of the telecos to deploy DSL beyond the current distance limitations. Without being specific, I have been informed that equipment has already been spec'd out, but have not been informed who the vendor is. This is no surprise. We can all speculate.

I understand that the technology will only work if the subscriber is currently on a pair gain system, which I am. How does this effect the list of possible candidates? Additionally, I speculate that this equipment is being purchased with the telcos already eyeing the next generation of DSL deployment -- VDSL.

Based upon the foregoing, I would concur with your focus on PAIR, ALA as well as Bernard's nominaton of AFCI. I know that AFCI has a NGDLC that I "threw" my teleco's way -- & that w/i a few weeks, were in to pay a visit to my local "DSL-HQs." I was told it was "vaporware," FWIW.

MikeM, as far as I can tell, you only have one of the DSL providers on your list of DSL investments--Covad. There's also Rhythms NetConnections (RTHM), Concentric, Northpoint (registered for IPO), and several other start-ups. I've invested in Rhythms, which is highly volatile and makes no money and is therefore a perfect investment for the times. Also, I have a friend who is a DSLAM developer in the Washington DC area, and he said that Alcatel really bought a diamond in the rough with DSC. They are a probably a good play on DSL.
