Re: Adtran - Pure DSL Play?

Bernard,
Thanks for your comments. I want to check out all your suggestions but before doing so, what interested me most was your question about why Adtran isn't a pure play? Two reasons.

First reason (this is kind of dumb) was, awhile back I posted the description of a, "silver cans on poles by the road," thing. Frank was attempting to figure out what it was for me. Well one day, a tech had some cans open and I struck up a conversation with him about what was inside. While talking with him I noticed a lot of, "Adtran," stamped products. Well the tech told me it was all there to simply increase the number of voice phone lines GTE could pump out to the businesses located near those cans. I asked him some more questions, and for some reason I got the impression Adtran didn't do much in the DSL arena. But now that I add more thought to it, I think I was mistaken. I'm glad your question caused me to think about it more.

Because now that I think about it more (duh), some of those cans have "HDSL" stickers on them and I believe "ADSL" stickers too, maybe ISDN too. So FINALLY putting the pieces together, does Adtran sell products that mainly, "digitize," signals over copper? And in doing so, increase the number of voice lines available to the telco's customers? AND as a side result, bring medium bandwidth DSL service to their doorstep too(if they wanted to pay for it)? If so, this has really got my interest now.

Second reason (this is dumber than the first), I confused Adtran with another company. For some reason I thought they were ADC Telecommunications (ADCT). We had talked about ADCT awhile back and I think we came to the conclusion, ADCT was kind of a jack-of-all-trades. I associated Adtran with ADC Telecommunications and they have nothing to do with each other on the corporate level.
Thanks,
MikeM(From Florida)

PS1 Here's a link to Adtran's Products page. You can click on links along the top for all their products. They neatly divide it into five categories:
adtran.com

PS2 Frank, coincidently, on the linked page above is one of those "siver can" things I was talking about. It doesn't look like shiny silver in the scanned image, but in real life it does have a metallic mirror surface. I know the silver can I see along the street has nothing to do with wireless, so they use that same silver can for other uses too.

Re: AFCI as a DSL Play (Indirect)

" I would add...(indirectly) AFCI, since DLC deployment goes together with DSL deployment."

Bernard,
In reading up some more on DSL, I'm slightly confused (my usual DSL Due Diligence state).

Now if I'm not mistaken, somewhere around 20% of US homes are accessed via DLC equipment already. So this means an ILEC (or a data CLEC) would have to put the DSLAMs in those cabinets if they wanted to deploy to that 20% of the marketplace.

But why would an ILEC want to purchase more DLCs when they cause headaches for DSL deployments? I guess I don't understand why DLCs are necessary for DSL deployment. It means DSLAMs have to go in the cabinet and it seems like it would be easier to put them in the COs.

BTW, even though I don't understand it, I see that GTE installed a nice shiny new DLC cabinet (I think it's a DLC) next to those telephone pole thingys I've mentioned in the past. GTE poured a nice little concrete slab next to the shiny canister thingys. Then mounted a cabinet that looks just like:
afc.com

I've missed them a couple of times opening it up and working on it. One of these days, while walking by, I'll catch them and look inside to get some product labels.
Thanks,
