I think it's all about who has control. There are a lot of people out there who just don't think Intel should have this much control, that Intel only cares about its own well-being at the expense of others who can't keep up. And perhaps there is an ounce of truth to that.

The problem is, everyone is playing the same game. If it isn't Intel, it will probably be another company who gains control and dictates standards. Even worse, if there are several companies trying to dictate the standard, we'll have VHS vs. Beta all over again. Take a look at how many writeable DVD standards are out there (at least four, I think) to see what happens when you have a so-called "democracy".
