Thanks to the really intelligent comments on this board, I can understand the referenced news article and its significance for SanDisk. From the article, as well as recent SNDK conference call with analysts, I infer that practically all the MMC products will use at least some SNDK patents. And even though Sony's memory stick will find wide acceptance, simply because Sony is so large, it doesn't rule out other formats coexisting, just as there is more than one size of photographic film, and two camcorder formats (VHS and Sony's 8mm).

The more flash memory products that use at least some SNDK patents, the more SNDK should start performing like QUALCOMM, a telecommunications company whose digital cellular patents are turning the company into a real cash cow. With the market for flash memory products expected to triple in a year (conservative estimate), SNDK is very likely to get a sizable portion of the profits.
