The argument seems to me is centured on how to prevent guns from getting into irresponsible or criminal hands in the free society (in police society it is easy)....not on how to take hunting guns away..

derek,
i might add a bit further in that regards....
Funny that you don't see that same outcry for a ban on drinking by teens or adults...I think the last figures I heard were something like 25,000 dead annualy just from drunk driving. that's a teensy bit more than 25 students... Not that i don't feel sorry for what happened, but it is just as tragic for the mothers and fathers of those dead drinkers and victims of same...

This current spin on the guns is a joke.

Derek,

What is non-sensical as you put it, is to have a country where BOTH civilians and government/gubernatorial-appointed officers are ENTITLED to MAKE JUSTICE! Because, that's the bottom line, Derek!! Americans should TRUST their OWN, DEMOCRATIC, federal authorities; they should stop behave like paranoid people who think their own, elected representatives will one day storm their little suburbs with death squads! Because, if such a folly were to happen, their mom-and-pop semi-automatic rifles will be no match anyway!

Comparing speech violence and media violence with BASIC, physical violence is no argument: civilisation is a never-ending, slow process that aims at diverting violence and removing it from a direct, head-to-head confrontation. That's the ''little secret'' behind America's frenzy for Free Trade: the goal is to bring diverse human societies on a SYMBOLIC battlefield where they can fight with each other with SYMBOLIC weapons! Using words and slogans and movies on the mediatic battlefield; manipulating currencies, factories, and banks on the economical playground...

So, the bottomline is that you can't fully eliminate (human) violence BUT you can modify it, you can transform it in a SYMBOLIC one. Yet, by allowing every US citizen --from a 20-something immature kid to a respectable grandma-- to carry a gun, that is a ''self-justice-enforcing appliance'', you DESTROY one of the most important pillar of civilisation! And you deceive people by making them believe that, should the Federal Justice/Law enforcement fails, they could still go along with their own ''survival-justice-kit''.
I think American people must face up to it: this free-for-all gun culture has done more damage to the US fabric than anything else and --please!-- don't stupidly blame ''HATE''... Leave that silly explanation for Catholic bishops or televangelists: we also have hate here in Europe, we do have hate in Belgium, there's hate right here in Brussels... Yet, I've never heard of such extreme outbursts as Littleton's because, over here, you just cannot purchase a gun without a police authorization.

My 2 cents,
Gustave.
