edlm: If that Alta Vista 4th placing was computed using the same assumptions that have been used in the past to place it at 12th and 13th then the improvement in about a month or two has been remarkable. My suspicion, though, is that different assumptions are being used. Not to say that they are inferior asumptions. In fact, the grouping of related portals/web sites appears to be rational.

The evaluation of traffic on portals and web sites is still in its infancy. The Alta Vista IPO prospectus might give us more insight into what is happening. The higher up the list it can get before the spin-off the more value that is added.

PS I'm curious why the list reproduces only Alta Vista's logo. Is there a connection between the publication and AV?

Alta Vista mentioned this morning in WSJ article about Double Click's results. Excerpt:

"Revenue rose 70% to $22.1 million. So-called system revenue was $31.1 million; system revenue includes commissions DoubleClick earned through its relationship with Compaq Computer's AltaVista, a major customer with whom it has cut a special ad revenue-sharing arrangement. DoubleClick sells advertising space across a network of 7,400 Web sites so online publishers don't have to handle their own sales efforts."

IBM not selling PC business to DELL!

April 28, 1999

Gerstner Says IBM Will Keep Investing
In Unprofitable Personal-Computer Unit
By a WALL STREET JOURNAL Staff Reporter

MIAMI -- International Business Machines Corp. Chief Executive Louis V. Gerstner Jr. said the company will continue to invest in its unprofitable personal-computer unit, which he predicted will "make some money going forward."

Company Profile: International Business Machines

The statements were made during IBM's annual meeting in Miami, which also included announcement of a 9% dividend boost and shareholder approval of a 2-for-1 stock split.

Responding to a shareholder question about the PC unit, Mr. Gerstner said IBM will "continue to give a substantial amount of attention" to the segment, which includes desktop PCs, laptops and small computer servers.

IBM, Armonk N.Y., has faced more calls in recent months to exit its PC business, which lost nearly $1 billion last year amid price pressure and competition from rivals including Dell Computer Corp. and Compaq Computer Corp.

But the unit showed strong improvement in the first quarter, boosted by sales of laptops and small servers. The pretax loss for the unit was $89 million, compared with $458 million in the year-earlier period.

IBM also announced a $3.5 billion share-repurchase plan and said it will boost its quarterly dividend to 24 cents a share, from 22 cents a share, payable June 10 to stock of record May 10. It was the fourth dividend increase in as many years. IBM shares gained $2.125 to $212 Tuesday in New York Stock Exchange composite trading.

A footnote to some of the Class Actions suits:

Firm Settles
Suit Over
Junk Faxes

By Mary Flood

The Wall Street Journal

A Houston company accused of sending out unsolicited "junk" faxes has agreed to settle a lawsuit -- a settlement that could lead to other lawsuits against fax advertisers and their clients and a halt to the sending of unsolicited faxes.........awyers for the plaintiffs also are asking Judge Brown to declare the entire case a class action.............Julius Glickman, a Houston lawyer ........ "If we either go to trial or settle with more companies, this could put a virtual end to junk faxing," Mr. Glickman says.

Steven Zager, an Austin lawyer representing three of the defendants, who is on a committee overseeing the case for the entire group, predicts that the plaintiffs will be unsuccessful in winning class certification and the case will just evaporate.

Still, he sees the settlement, and a recent decision by Judge Brown to allow the Houston case to move forward, as an invitation for other lawyers to file similar suits.

"Here, creative, intelligent people motivated by profit" will seek to "make a serious buck" through such lawsuits, says Mr. Zager, who represents Houston-based Compaq Computer Corp.; GTE Mobilnet of Houston Inc., a unit of Irving-based GTE Corp.; and Domino's Pizza Inc. of Ann Arbor, Mich., in the

In evaluating COMPAQ's strategy to lessen its dependence on PC's, and to develop new sources of revenues and profits, we hear very little about the potential contributon of Alta Vista. Portals receive such a high rating on WS because their future earnings are expected to be gigantic. The CEO of AV, Schrock, said a few months ago, that the deal was to make AV the No.1 portal and e-commerce site and profitable within two years. So far, COMPAQ has received no premium on its share price for AV and it is rarely, if ever mentioned in analysts reports. Yet its retained majority shareholding in AV, after the spin-off, will be the source of income through dividends not to mention increased business for compaq.com. The capital appreciation of AV's stock will also show up on the COMPAQ balance sheet starting as early as the day after the AV spin-off.
