Tim ---

where can i buy a cheap PC for my friend, she already has the monitor and she will only use it for the internet.

I'll submit this entry for your quest ....
compgeeks.com

I purchased a couple of these pups week before last to set up a cheap workstation network for a friend ....
clean, nice, cheap, AND SLOW ..... ggggg

but I can also remember when the P75 came out and at that time I thought it was reeeaaaaaallllllyyyyy FAST ......

they do work, and I played with one of them on the net after I installed a stripped version of Win98 ....
actually wasn't too shabby a performance and the price was dandy.

I think this is a good setup with good components. Same price as other systems you will see advertised, but better stuff inside:

home.eznet.net

atacom.com

Doesn't come with any software besides the OS -- maybe you can get them to throw something in.

I think the $40 assembly charge includes loading the OS, but I'm not sure.

$800.00 Dell system:

Intel Celeron® processor, 333MHz MiniTower with 128KB L2 Cache
commerce.us.dell.com
(w/o Monitor)

Includes:
Microsoft® Windows® 98

Bundled Software
Microsoft® Works Suite 99 with Money 99 Basic

McAfee VirusScan 4.02 at no additional charge

$ 869.00 (w/o Monitor) includes a 3 year warranty.

When I bought my Dell P2 450 (box only) in Sept 98, I priced out building a PC myself. It worked out cheaper to to buy a Dell.

The Dell is probably a better deal when you consider the warranty and the software they throw in. Hard to argue with 3 years free service.

The Dell has only 1 spare slot, and the $869 price is with 32 MB RAM rather than 64 in the Atacom, (which you might want to bump up). But the warranty is the clincher, particularly for someone who's not tech-inclined.
