Thanks very much, John! Yes, you are right, it was the Minoans I was thinking of. The particular works that impressed me were the works at the Met, stone stuff that was not painted. Very elegant. I appreciate your help!

And, I have never heard of Csontvary! Amazing! The problem with the dang Internet is that it is like looking at a bad photo of a fax. I will do everything possible to try and see his work in real life. I can see from the images on those sites that he really had a remarkable command of atmosphere and mood. It's just enough to make me want to see the real works, he obviously was a great painter.
