Hi Marshall,

The hacker you are referring to is known as captain crunch. He received that moniker when he discovered that the whistle prize in Captain crunch (multitone whistle) had two key switching frequencies used by the long distance networks.

I believe ATT approached him about a job in the late sixties offering him 6 figures and he told them to f___ themselves. I am pretty sure he was busted by the FBI, later.
