Daniel, there's an old saying. "Figures don't lye, but liers figure". Spouting statistics without context is a waste. They would have some credibility if you would have shown per-capita stats, since there are about 300 million people in the United States, vs 20 million in Canada and 120 million in Japan.

Funny though, Japanese kids wear uniforms, have strict laws which are enforced regarding crime. And don't teach sex-education, condom distribution, and a bunch of other left wing concepts in there public education system. They also have a much longer school year, school day, and don't hand out riddlin, and other drugs to pacify the children, or social promote kids that aren't ready. Most importantly they are taught to respect the school and teachers. There is a right way to behave in a japanese school and a wrong way. They don't let the kids run the school, or determine what moral code the school must accept. In other words... ACLU suits costing the taxpayers millions of dollars are absent from the minds of school administrators. Your right as a student is to learn, and that's about it!

What a concept huh?

As for the rest of the population, they actually punish people for breaking the law, especially if a gun is involved in a crime. Things like getting out in 7 years for a 20 year sentence of rape, or life sentence of murder are unheard of in Japan.

Daniel, if you think life is so great in Canada, or Japan, why don't you go move there. The history of America's freedom to own guns is quite different than in those countries. Freedom typically doesn't mean much to a government control loving liberal Democrat. But it means a lot to the average American. As I said previously, if Democrats are such wonderful leaders in wanting guns banned, and public education. Why don't they go on National Television and be the first ones to publicly state they will never buy or own a gun in their homes. And be the first ones to send every one of their kids to public schools? Nah, we didn't really mean us not owning one! Or sending our kids there! We meant those stupid average America kinda people! After all we are the annoited ones. :-)

Tell me, how does Switzerland fit into your equations?

Michael

"In 1993, handguns were used to kill 82 people in Japan, 76 people in Canada, 33 people in Great Britain
While firearms killed 39,595 in the U.S. that year, though the handgun breakout is unclear.
"

Daniel

A comparison would be worthwhile. In 1963 the homicide rate was around 5 per 100,000, climbing to over 9 by 1993. (http://rkba.org/research/stat/homicide)
In the meantime, the Gun Control Act of 1968:
-extended the ban on interstate shipment to long guns;
-prohibited the sale of guns to minors, drug addicts, mental incompetents, and convicted felons;
-strengthened licensing and record-keeping requirements for gun dealers and collectors; and,
-increased penalties for those using guns in crime.

I realize the problem is multifactorial, but if you must focus on restricting/eliminating legal gun ownership to reduce crime, statistics alone would indicate that firearm legislation is counterproductive to the goal.

I would also have to ask if you would expect a war on guns to work as well as the war on drugs.
