Carol, of course that's a simplified view of it, but it is basically correct. In most cases, when you buy or sell a stock it is because of your evaluation of the future prospects of the company. If everyone had the same views on the future of the company, shares would rarely be traded except by people who found that their money is needed or would be better served elsewhere. Therefore, most trades are made on the basis of differing views and opinions, which can of course be a result of naivety.
